Fractional CMO cost depends mostly on two things: how many days a week you buy, and where the person works. In the US, fractional marketing leaders average $209 an hour (Fractional Work Report 2026), and in the UK published rate cards run from £800 to £1,800 a day, or roughly £4,000 to £12,000 a month for one to three days a week (PrimeWise, 2026).
TL;DR: Expect to pay for days, not outcomes. One day a week of a fractional CMO costs roughly $7,200 a month in the US (our arithmetic on the survey average), £4,000 in the UK and SGD 5,000 to 8,000 in Singapore (provider rate cards). The Netherlands has no published fractional CMO benchmark we could verify, and India has only provider price lists. Per day, a fractional CMO is pricier than a full-time hire. In total, it is cheaper because you buy fewer days. And in almost every case, the price covers advice, not the people who do the work.

How we sourced these numbers
Most pages ranking for this keyword are written by fractional CMOs selling fractional CMO services. That does not make their numbers wrong, but you should know which kind of number you are reading. So every figure below is labelled one of two ways:
- Independent survey: a report built from many practitioners or assignments, published by someone who is not selling you the service.
- Provider rate card: prices published by a firm that sells fractional CMO services. Useful as a market signal, but it is one firm's view.
Where we could not find a credible source for a market, we say so instead of guessing.

How much does a fractional CMO charge per hour?
The most solid hourly figure we found is from the US. The Fractional Work Report 2026 from Fractional Jobs puts the average rate for fractional marketing leaders at $209 an hour, against $223 an hour across all fractional executive roles. Marketing is slightly below the average, not above it.
Hourly billing is not how most of these engagements actually run, though. The same report found that 46% of fractional executives bill primarily on a monthly retainer. In practice you agree a number of days a week and a monthly fee, and the hourly rate is just the way to compare offers.
How much does a fractional CMO cost per month?
Turn the US hourly average into a month and you get a useful rule of thumb. At $209 an hour, an eight-hour day costs about $1,672. One day a week is about 4.3 days a month, so one day a week costs roughly $7,200 a month, and two days a week roughly $14,400 a month. That is our arithmetic on a survey average, not a quoted price, but it lines up with how most retainers are structured.
The provider rate cards in other markets follow the same shape: price scales with days. One day a week buys strategy and a monthly review. Two days buys someone who manages your team and sits in leadership meetings. Three days starts to look like a part-time employee.
What is a typical fractional CMO day rate in the UK?
PrimeWise, a UK provider, publishes £800 to £1,800 a day, based on its own analysis of more than 40 UK engagements in 2025 and 2026. Its monthly retainers are about £4,000 for one day a week, £7,500 for two and £12,000 for three.
For independent context, the Institute of Interim Management's 2025 survey put the average interim manager day rate at £894 across all functions. Interim and fractional are not the same thing (an interim usually covers a full-time seat for a fixed period), but it shows where a senior day of work sits in the UK market.

Fractional CMO in the Netherlands: what we could and could not find
We could not find an independent, published benchmark for fractional CMO rates in the Netherlands. Several Dutch providers publish their own price ranges, but none showed how the numbers were built, so we have left them out.
The closest credible data point is the Knab ZZP Uurtarievenboekje 2026, based on more than 20,000 Dutch freelancers, which puts the average interim manager rate at €117 an hour excluding VAT. That is the interim manager (non-IT) category, not marketing. At eight hours, it works out to about €936 a day.
One more Dutch data point is worth knowing before you negotiate. Planet Interim analysed more than 90,000 interim assignments in 2023 and found that interim professionals on average settled for rates about 25% below the rate they wanted, partly because clients' rate expectations were lower and partly because intermediaries took a margin (Planet Interim via Consultancy.nl, 2024). The asking price and the paid price are different numbers.
Fractional CMO in India: rate cards only
We found no independent survey of fractional CMO pricing in India. The clearest published price list is from upGrowth, itself a provider: ₹1.5L to ₹2.5L a month for 4 to 8 hours a week of advisory, ₹2.5L to ₹5L for 10 to 15 hours embedded, and ₹5L to ₹8L or more for 15 to 20+ hours.
Here is the part most pages skip. The middle tier, ₹2.5L to ₹5L a month, adds up to ₹30L to ₹60L a year. Glassdoor puts a full-time Head of Growth in India at ₹19.25L to ₹60.75L, with an average of ₹32.75L (October 2026). In India, a fractional CMO is not always the cheaper option. Compare the annual total, not the monthly fee.
Fractional CMO in Singapore: rate cards only
The same gap exists in Singapore. The clearest published figures come from Marketing Agency Singapore, an agency: SGD 5,000 to 8,000 a month for one day a week, SGD 8,000 to 15,000 for two days, and SGD 15,000 to 25,000 for three or more. The same source puts a full-time CMO's total pay at SGD 250,000 to 450,000 a year. We could not find an independent survey to check either range against.
Is a fractional CMO cheaper than a full-time Head of Growth?
Per day, no. Per year, usually yes, because you buy fewer days.
Take London. Two days a week at PrimeWise's rate card is about £7,500 a month, or £90,000 a year. Glassdoor's typical total pay range for a full-time Head of Growth in London is £61.8k to £122.6k (25th to 75th percentile, October 2026). So two days a week of a fractional CMO costs about the same as the typical total pay of a mid-range full-time London Head of Growth working five. The full-time hire also carries employer costs, recruiting time and notice periods, which we break down in Head of Growth salary.
The honest summary: you pay a premium per day for seniority and flexibility, and you save by buying less of it.
What actually drives the price
- Days per week. The single biggest lever in every rate card above.
- Advice or execution. A fractional CMO who only advises costs less than one who also manages your team and agencies.
- Seniority and sector. Leaders who have scaled companies like yours charge more.
Price is rarely what buyers decide on. A 2024 survey by Duct Tape Marketing, Databox and ActiveCampaign (261 respondents, mostly fractional CMOs and agencies) found that the companies who hire fractional CMOs ranked price last among their selection factors.
The cost that is not on the invoice
A fractional CMO fee buys judgement. It almost never buys execution. Someone still has to write the content, fix the site, run the campaigns and build the tracking. That is your team, an agency, or both, and it is a second bill. When you compare options, add the cost of the people who will do the work. For how the models compare on that, read fractional CMO vs agency.
Common questions
How much does a fractional CMO charge per hour?
In the US, the Fractional Work Report 2026 from Fractional Jobs puts the average for fractional marketing leaders at $209 an hour, slightly below the $223 average across all fractional executive roles. Most engagements are not billed hourly, though: 46% of fractional executives bill mainly on a monthly retainer for an agreed number of days.
How much does a fractional CMO cost per month?
It scales with days per week. At the US survey average of $209 an hour, one day a week works out to roughly $7,200 a month and two days to about $14,400. UK provider rate cards show about £4,000 for one day a week and £7,500 for two. Singapore rate cards show SGD 5,000 to 15,000 for one to two days.

What does a fractional CMO actually do?
A fractional CMO is a senior marketing leader working part-time, usually one to three days a week. They set the marketing strategy, decide budget priorities, join leadership meetings and manage the team or agencies doing the work. In most engagements they advise and direct rather than execute, so you still need people to write, build and run campaigns.
Where can I find a fractional CMO?
Most come through personal networks and referrals. The Fractional Work Report 2026 found 72% of fractional leaders won their first client through their personal network. Beyond referrals, there are fractional talent marketplaces, job boards for fractional roles, and specialist firms in each market. Ask any candidate which single number they will own and how they will report on it.
Is a fractional CMO cheaper than a full-time Head of Growth?
Per day, no. Per year, usually yes, because you buy fewer days. Two days a week on a UK rate card is about £90,000 a year, close to the middle of Glassdoor's London Head of Growth pay range. In India, an embedded fractional tier of ₹30L to ₹60L a year overlaps the full-time Head of Growth range entirely.
Where a Chief Growth Officer fits
A fractional CMO advises part-time. That is valuable when you have a team ready to execute and need senior direction. It is less useful when nobody owns the growth number and nobody is doing the work.
CGO by ClappX was built for that second case. On organic growth, we execute and we own the number: being found in search and in the first answer a buyer sees, site structure, listings, catalogue, content, authority and tracking. On go-to-market, paid strategy, pricing, retention and new markets, we advise and you decide. We do not run ad campaigns or make ad creative; we set paid strategy and direct your agency.
The pricing is deliberately simple: one flat monthly fee, less than one senior hire, plus a share of organic growth only, agreed after month one against a baseline both sides sign in week one. Never a share of paid revenue. Month to month, no lock-in. If the numbers are not moving, stop paying us. If you want to understand the role behind the name, start with what a fractional head of growth is.
